Yoga for Back Care with Elise Browning Miller
FYTA Presents: Yoga for Back Care with Elise Browning Miller
Dates: Livestream Classes on the Weekend of November 14 and 15th, 2020
Many people come to yoga for relief of back pain, whether it’s as minor as neck or lower back tension or as serious as severe scoliosis.
- Often the pain can be chronic rather than from a specific injury or condition.
- Done with correct emphasis, yoga asana can be extremely successful in alleviating the pain for mild or serious conditions.
- These classes will address how to use yoga to increase strength and flexibility in the back focusing on the relationship between the spinal column, the pelvis and shoulder blades.
- Elise will teach both classical and modified asanas which are particularly beneficial for back conditions such as lower back pain, disc disease, sciatica, upper back and neck tightness and scoliosis.
- Anatomy will be discussed as pertinent to the poses taught.
- All levels are welcome, including teachers wishing to enhance their skills with an emphasis on back care.
Fees for the Weekend (3 Sessions): $150.00 FYTA Members and $165.00 Non-Members. Individual sessions can also be purchased at the prices below.
Saturday, November 14th:
8am – 11am Pacific time (11am – 2pm Eastern)
Yoga for Scoliosis and Asymmetry
Elise will present information on scoliosis with time to explore in depth our imbalances. Then she will teach how to adapt the asanas for any asymmetry whether it’s a major structural scoliosis or minor imbalance.
IMPORTANT: For this livestream class, it is very important to know your pattern of scoliosis in order for you to be more effective in practicing yoga for your scoliosis. You will get much more from this workshop if you have a clear understanding of your scoliosis pattern. Elise will be giving information regarding these patterns at the beginning of the workshop but determining your curve before the workshop can be very helpful.
Scoliosis has a lateral and rotational aspect to it. There are four typical patterns though a small percentage will go the opposite way: Right Thoracic curve, Left Lumbar curve, Right Thoracic-Left Lumbar curves, and Right Thoracic -Lumbar curve. If you do not know your scoliosis pattern, please read the next paragraph to help you to determine which pattern of scoliosis you have.
If you feel that your right side is bulging behind further than your left and the ribs spreading to the right side, it is most likely a right thoracic curve. If you feel your left lower back bulging back and waist going to the left, then it is a left lumbar curve. If you feel both, it is a double right thoracic, left lumbar curve. If you feel your right mid back and lower back going to the right with a left shoulder higher, then it is called a right thoracic-lumbar curve with a compensating curve to the left in the upper thoracic and neck.
If you don’t have an x-ray or a written report and don’t know your pattern from reading the information above, you may email me with any pertinent information such as which shoulder or hip is higher. One suggestion is to have a family member, partner, or spouse take a photo of you standing with your back to the camera and also in a rounded forward bend and send this to me.
I would greatly appreciate a response before the class so you can receive the most benefit from the class.
